Here is something that bothers me, to the point of severe agitation: people who pick apart Christianity until it’s nothing but shreds yet refuse to ever investigate anything. In fact, we (Christians) are accused of “denying the truth” and what have you because of our faith, all of which is based on the assumption that we were spoon-fed Jesus our entire lives and believe in him “just cause.”
I have news for those people: you’re idiots.
I’m open to criticism any day of the week. Really. But it needs to be intelligent criticism. If you want to attack the Bible, I want you to have some freaking merit. READ IT. That’s step one. A baby step. Milk. STUDY IT. Then you’re moving on up. Then we can talk. Have you examined cross-references? Have you looked up the historical documents that the scriptures were translated from? In fact, have you studied the various translations and the process involved? Have you taken a glance at the cultures of the time?
No? Hm. Well. Surely you have some basis for your argument against Christ.
Oh yeah – you know the gist of it, and it doesn’t seem very likely that it happened that way. Okay.
You see, atheists/agnostics/rationalists/whatever seem to feel that they can make unfounded arguments without having ever studied what they’re arguing against. And I don’t get that. Does one go into a debate blind and come out the victor? Apparently if it’s God you’re up against. It’s almost cool to take some sort of laid back, don’t believe in anything but myself stance. Trendy.
My favorite argument, for the record, is that Jesus was just a “great teacher.” Let me tell you something: if Jesus wasn’t divine, he was either A) crazy, or B) a liar. That doesn’t sound like any great teachers I’ve ever known. Believe or don’t believe. There is no middle ground here. I know that’s the comfortable place to be, but this is one of those things you have to make a decision about.
Part of the reason this makes me so angry is that I used to be one of those people. I used to entertain the “great teacher” notion. I wasn’t sure, and I was happy to point out faults and make empty accusations. Looking back, it makes me sick. I was a fool. I had never taken a serious look at the Bible, yet I felt like I had it all figured out.
I didn’t have a clue.

Perceived as a revolutionary and groundbreaking person, you have changed the minds of many people. While questioning the authority around you, you’ve also taken a significant amount of flack. But you’ve had the admirable guts to persevere. There’s a weird guy in the neighborhood using dubious means to protect you, but you’re pretty sure it’s worth it in the end. Did I ever tell you that I want to be a SAHM when I get older? That’s right: Stay At Home Mom. If you would have said that to me five years ago, I would have scoffed. Now it’s something I want. I’m sure the hubby would like for me to work so that we would have mucho mulah, but he’s incredibly supportive of the idea. He even added the idea of home schooling to the mix (which I hadn’t even considered before). As a public school teacher, it seems like it would only be logical to send the kids out there, but I kind of like the idea of teaching them at home. It’s something to think about.
Has it only been a day since he left?
I want this place to look fabulous when he gets back. Clean, unpacked, mostly moved in from the other apartment… I want him to come home and say, “wow.”
The clips from WTC look good. I still cry sometimes when I see images from that day. I miss the unity that apparently only mass devastation can bring.
